ビル・モンロー＆ブルー・グラス・ボーイズのライヴ音源、それもドイツでのものが発掘された。しかも映像付きで。これをニュースといわずしてなんとする。今回発掘されたのは75年５月と89年７月のライヴ。モンロー自身は69年にもドイツへのツアーを経験しているが、そのときは米軍基地での演奏だけで一般のファンの前ではなかったという。75年のヨーロッパ・ツアーは当時イギリスに住んでいたビル・クリフトンが仲介、行を共にしたもので、そのツアーの最後に出演したノイスエーデンデのフェスでの45分２セット。ケニー・ベイカー(f)、ラルフ・ルイス(g)、ボブ・ブラック(bj)、ランディ・デイヴィス(bs)という、その前年初めて日本に来たときと同じメンバーで、初めてモンローの姿を目にし演奏を耳にした、その興奮を思い出させてくれるもの。強烈なパワー、エネルギーを発散するモンローはもちろん、心技体いずれも絶頂期、冴えに冴え渡るベイカーを軸としたブルー・グラス・ボーイズに脱帽。89年のほうは、オズボーン・ブラザーズを帯同したツアーから、ストレーケンモーアでの45分２セット。年齢から来る衰えは否めないが、それを克服するエネルギーを全編に感じさせるとともに、精神的にはどんどんと深みを増していったモンローを、トム・ユーイング(g)、テイター・テイト(f)、ブレイク・ウィリアムズ(bj)、ビリー・ローズ(bs)という布陣でサポートしている。そして、この90分の演奏を収録したDVD、１台の据えつけカメラだけで撮ったアマチュア・レベルの映像とはいえ、モンローのライヴをコンプリートに収録した映像としてはいまのところ唯一のものであり、貴重この上ないお宝であることは間違いあるまい。ライヴ・フォト、ヨーロッパ・ツアーのパンフレットのリプリントなど、リズ・マイヤーほかのエッセイなど満載、52ページブックレットつき、さすがベア・ファミリーのお仕事。
