フラット＆スクラッグスの最初の録音メンバーであり、その後ビル・モンロー初期の名曲も残したマッ ク・ワイズマン。「ア・ボイス・フロム・ハート」という異名でカントリー・ヒットもモノにしている マック、1970年代に益々深みと巧さの増したそのボーカルを堪能させる20曲集。

1952年、ブルーグラスの草創期にデビュー、裕福な家庭に生まれた大学生で、田舎音楽をやることに家族の反対を恐れてビル・クリフトンという芸名をつけたという元祖!?筋金入りブルーグラス・フォロワー。1961年にはブルーグラス史に残るブルーグラス・コンサートを開催、そののちイギリスに移住、ケネディ大統領の呼びかけた平和部隊でフィリピンにも滞在、その間、日本でも学生ブルーグラッサーらと交流会を持ったという経歴を持ち、外国にブルーグラスを広めた第一人者である。82歳の現在もなお、カーターファミリーを中心にトラッド音楽の普及に努め、さらにヨーロッパや日本など外国からのミュージシャンを影から支えつづけている。本作もニュージーランドのブルーグラスバンド、ハミルトン・カウンティ・ブルーグラス・バンド(HCBB)と録音したすばらしいトラッドグラスと、同時期に行ったソロライブ・パフォーマンスの全28曲、ビル・クリフトンのカーターファミリーを軸にしたトラッド音楽への愛情とやさしさに溢れたすばらしい演奏が楽しめる。ちなみに、HCBBは1971年に外国ブルーグラス・バンドとして初めてビル・モンローのビーンブロッサムフェスの金曜日に出演したのだが、一般には翌土曜日に米国本土に到着、出演した日本のブルーグラス45の方がセンセーショナルな話題（なにせ人種が違った!?）となっている。とにかく本作、ビル・クリフトンの優しく柔らかいボーカルが堪能できるすばらしいブルーグラス作品である。。

カントリー・ジェントルメンがフォークウェイズ・レコードに残した最後の１枚。このアルバム、何故か67年４月に『Country Gentlemen in Concert』というタイトルで日本だけで発売され、のち73年にようやくアメリカでも発売されたといういわくつきのもの。しかもLPではベースが全く聴こえてこずトリオでの演奏ではないかといわれたこともあったが、どうやらエド・フェリスが入っているようである。今回のリリースに際して、ライナー・ノーツではトム・グレイがベーシストとしてクレジットされているが、このライヴ録音に関わった当事者によれば、今作は64年11月１日ニュー・ヨーク州シラキュースでのライヴということであり、その年７月にトム・グレイが抜けてエド・フェリスが参加しているという事実、そして、トム自身最近その点を否定していることからも、ベースはエド・フェリスで間違いないだろう。ともあれ、そうしたいわく因縁はさておき、キングストン・トリオをおちょくったヴァージョンも含めて、カントリー・ジェントルメン本来のパワー、エネルギー、疾走感に満ち溢れた演奏は見事の一言、こんな演奏ができるのは彼らしかいなかったし、これからも現れることはないだろう。チャーリー・ウォーラー、ジョン・ダフィ、エディ・アドコック、３人の異能のミュージシャンが集まったところに生まれた奇跡がこうしたかたちに残された、絶頂期カントリー・ジェントルメンの貴重極まりない記録である。

ケンタッキー州法で「ニューグラスの父」と制定されたサム・ブッシュが、いや「ニューグラスの父はジョン・ダッフィだ」と主張する、それほどに偉大な影響を遺したジョン。ビル・モンローが亡くなった1996年、その三ヵ月後に若くして急逝したジョンは、楽器主導になりがちな1960年代以降の若いブルーグラスにボーカル（歌）の重要性をことさらに伝え、時代とバンド（カントリー・ジェントルメン）の主張にあう歌詞を求めディランやバエズをいち早く取り入れたセンスは70年代以降もセルダム・シーンでも発揮。メトロポリタン・オペラ歌手の息子として「発声」にも（聴けば分かる強力テナー!!）一家言を持ち、さらにブルーグラス界でおそらくはじめて、正しい歌の「発音」を意識したユニバーサルなボーカリストでもある。本作は1962年のカントリー・ジェントルメンからセルダム・シーンとバンドサウンドに固執、決して自身のソロを発表せず、バンドの中で聴衆に伝えようとした歌を集めたバラッド集だ。ちなみにシュガーヒル時代のセルダム・シーンから集めたソロ名義のもう一枚『Always in Style』(SH-3926 \2,573-)がある。ブルーグラスにあたらしい価値観を吹き込んだ偉大なパイオニアであると同時に、終生アパラチアン・バラッドの魅力を胸に秘め、トラッドグラスの体現者でもあったジョン・ダッフィ名義の２枚のアルバム、大切に聴きたいね……!?

キング・ウィルキーに続いてレベル・レコードからデビューの新進気鋭、スティープ・キャニオン・レンジャーズ。ノース・キャロライナ州チャペル・ヒルのノース・キャロライナ大学で学んでいたウッディ・プラットなど４人が結成、2001年ロッキー・グラスのバンド・コンテストで優勝して注目され、その後２枚のインディーズ・アルバムを経ての今回のデビュー。プログレッシヴ・ブルーグラスに傾斜したスタイルでジャム・バンド系フェスでも人気を集めてきたということだが、このレベル・デビュー作では、ジミー・マーティンのカヴァー"I'll Drink No More Wine"を除いてすべてバンド・メンバーのオリジナル、それもどこか懐かしさを感じさせるメロディー・ラインをもった曲、トラッド・ブルーグラスの約束事にきっちりとのっとった曲を、ベーシックなデュエットも多用したオーソドックスなハーモニーとまっすぐなトラッド・サウンドに仕立てて(オールド・ファッションなインスト２曲も)、若さに似合わぬ落ち着いた正統派ブルーグラスを聴かせている。ETSUバンドで来日したこともあるジョッシュ・ゴーフォースがゲスト参加、味わいぶかいフィドルをたっぷりとフィーチュアしている。

ボビー・オズボーン、ラリー・リチャードソン、ポール・ウィリアムズなど多くの名プレイヤーを輩出した名門ロンサム・パイン・フィドラーズ。のちにクリンチ・マウンテン・ボーイズで名を残すカーリー・レイ・クラインや、ブルー・グラス・ボーイズのユーティリティ・プレイヤー、チャーリー・クラインなどを生んだウェスト・ヴァージニアのクライン・ファミリーの長エズラを中心として1938年に結成され、のちにブルーグラスに転じたＬＰＦが、50年代、コージー(４曲)とＲＣＡ(22曲)に残した名演名唱のすべて。60年代にその多くが日本にも紹介され、意外にも洗練されたサウンドでずいぶんと人気のあったことを思い出すオールド・ファンには、またとない贈り物だ。かつてベア・ファミリーのサブ・レーベルから発売されていたものの嬉しい再発。コージーの４曲にはオズボーン、リチャードソンが、またＲＣＡ初期にはウィリアムズが参加している。ＬＰＦの伝統は、ＲＣＡ後期から中心メンバーとなったゴインズ兄弟の手で今日まで継承されている。
アール・スクラッグスの三歳年下ながら、アールより先にビル・モンローのバンドに誘われたドン・レノ、しかし徴兵されて第二次世界大戦に参加、特殊部隊員として東南アジアで日本軍と戦い負傷。終戦後、今度はアールの後釜としてモンローのバンドに参加、その後レッド・スマイリーとコンビを組んだ1951年にレノ＆スマイリーとして録音をはじめてからの前半109曲がこの第一集に収められている。バンジョーとギターを自在に操ったドン・レノという稀有のミュージシャンが1950年代アメリカン・エンターテイメント界に遺した見事な音楽だ。偉大なドン・レノ入門、まずは「これ！」の四枚組109曲集。絶対のオススメ!!
